- πήγανον, ου, τό (Aristoph. et al.; Theophr., HP 1, 3, 4; Diosc. 3, 45 al.; POxy 1675, 4; PTebt 273 introd.; CWessely, StudPal 20 [1921], 27, 5; Jos., Bell. 7, 178; loanw. in rabb.) rue (ruta chalepensis: Zohary 90), mentioned among the garden herbs that are tithed Lk 11:42 (the parallel Mt 23:23 has ἄνηθον, hence EbNestle, ZNW 7, 1906, 260f suspects an interchange of שברא and שבתא). Acc. to the Mishnah (Shebi’ith IX 1; s. Billerb. II 189) it was not necessary to tithe it.—RStrömberg, Griech.
